Why Do Babies Often Poop? Here's the Explanation
Does your baby poop up to 10 times a day? Learn the causes and when to consult a midwife to ensure your baby's healthy growth and development
STAGES OF BABY DEVELOPMENT

Babies who frequently pass stools often cause concern for parents. However, this condition is actually normal, especially for newborns who are exclusively breastfed.
Babies aged 0 to 1 month can have bowel movements up to 10 to 12 times a day. This happens because their digestive systems are still developing and learning to adapt to the food or fluids entering their bodies.
Here are several reasons why babies may poop frequently:
1. Gastrocolic Reflex
Every time a baby feeds, their intestines are stimulated to move. This natural reflex helps push stool out of the baby’s body.
2. Immature Digestive System
A baby's digestive organs are not yet fully developed, so the process of absorption and digestion happens faster than in adults.
3. Breast Milk Is Easily Digested
Breast milk contains natural components that help improve a baby’s digestion. Since it is easily absorbed, babies who consume breast milk tend to poop more often.
4. Consumption of Formula Milk
Babies who are fed with formula milk can also poop frequently, although their stool is usually thicker compared to breastfed babies.
5. Every Baby Is Different
The frequency of bowel movements varies among babies. Some may naturally poop more often, while others less frequently.
When Should You Be Concerned?
Although frequent pooping is generally normal for babies, parents should remain observant. Consult a doctor or midwife immediately if your baby experiences:
Very watery stools resembling diarrhea
Fever
Excessive fussiness or crying
Lethargy or lack of energy
Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, infrequent urination)
